Not having dealt with a 22 mag was wondering if using JHP 40gr ammo would be enough for yotes out to say under a 100yrds? Next keeping that in mind would just a fixed 4 power scope be the way to go? Can't afford a lot and would like to keep the cost of the scope under a 100 bucks. Bummed a couple of shells off a neighbor and ran them thru it and it chambers, fires, and ejects beautifully Action is very smooth. The inside and action are very clean and I really like the feel and the balance of this rifle. I'm a bit shy of wanting to rub to hard and take the blueing off. I've use Kroil oil and fine steel wool and those little green scrubber pads and have gotten most of the rust off. It was pretty rusted up but very few scratches in the wood. 22 ammunition ( CCI AR Tactical).Just picked up this little gun at a yard sale for 50 bucks. These are a fun series of small game hunting or target practice rifles. 7/16″ at 25 yards works out to 1.75MOA–quite a feat for iron sights and bulk. The M-49s walnut stock provides a handsome contrast against the black finish of the barrel and receiver. Since function-testing of this carbine before buying is very simple and spare parts are still available, I would rate it as a diamond in the rough. For a budget carbine with iron sights, that’s pretty impressive! My friend who owns this particular rifle has had it since he was eight years old back in the 1960s, and the gun just keeps on working with minimal care.
With the rifle rested on a sandbag, five-shot groups all looked like the picture below. Since 22 Short ammunition was cheaper than 22LR back then and also substantially quieter, many of these rifles have rather gunked-up chambers but substantial chamber erosion is unlikely. It was meant as a recreational plinker and succeeded admirably in that role.
